            Characteristics of Style Memory Game

H-1A-M3 analyzing the impact that specific individuals, ideas, events, and decisions had on the course of history          

H-1D-M1 describing the contributions of people, events, movements, and ideas that have been significant in the history of Louisiana 

Time 

            30 minutes 

Materials 

24 – blank index cards for each student (1 each for 12 characteristics and 1 each for 12 student-drawn pictures)

            PowerPoint or Overhead Transparencies

Objective 

            Identify style characteristics of Victorian homes     

Procedure 

Go through the pictures of Victorian homes in the PowerPoint presentation or Overhead Transparencies in the order below. 

While going through the images write the words on the board and draw simple pictures of the style characteristics of Victorian homes.  Students will be doing this on their index cards (one card for the word and one for its picture match). 

                        Gothic Revival

                                    1. Image 1 – Steeply pitched roofs

                                    2. Image 2 – Buttress for support

                                    3. Image 3 – Elaborate tracery in wood (and pointed arches)

                                    4. Image 3 – Pointed arches

                                    5. Image 4 - Battlements 

                        Italianate

                                    6. Images 1, 2 and 3 – Columns with elaborate moldings

7. Image 1 – Balustrades with turned columns resembling table or chair legs

                                    8. Image 2 – Sunbursts

                                    9. Image 3 – Delicate ornamental motifs resembling lace 

                        Queen Anne Revival

                                    10. Image 1 – Busy roofline (and turret)

11. Image 2 – Turret (and busy roofline) [Image 3 is another illustration of these]

                                    12. Image 4 – Bay window (and busy roofline)           

Students can take the cards home and color them to play the memory game and match the words and pictures.
