Lesson Procedures of What Do
Plantations Really Look Like?

OBJECTIVES

Students will develop a vocabulary to discuss features of Plantations
Students will identify features of Plantations, including mansions, cottages, and outbuildings
Students will observe differences in cash crops
Students will clearly communicate a description of Plantations

MATERIALS

16 note cards
Pencils and rulers
Reproducible Evergreen Plantation map
TV monitor, computer, or overhead projector

LESSON PROCEDURES

Introduce Vocabulary - Use Activity 1: Vocabulary Memory Game

Flash cards and memory game to learn and practice correct vocabulary

Map reading skills and observation of a plantation - Use Activity 2: Plantation Map Skills

Students will practice map skills using a legend
Students will draw and verbally convey conclusions from information presented 
Students will understand the extent of a plantation

Further identification and discussion - Use provided overhead transparency or provided Power Point Presentation and EZ Content Blueprint

Note taking and discussion exercise to build on and expand knowledge of the features of plantation design, architecture, and life

Ask students why they think these are features of a plantation
Pursue explanations concerning need for plantations to be self-sufficient, organized, display their wealth, efficient.

Review Vocabulary - Use Activity 1: Vocabulary Memory Game

Writing assessment

Written description of Plantation

Ask students to pretend they are writing to a distant relative describing their stay at the wealthy Evergreen sugar plantation
Using their notes and map students should clearly describe the features of the plantation and plantation life
