Creole Cottage Recipe

Materials

Provided 2-sided Visual Survey Form (download Page 1 & Page 2)
Image of Magnolia Mound/or provided transparency image
Pencils and rulers
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils

Objective

To identify primary features of Creole architecture

To use knowledge to independently construct examples of Creole architecture

Procedure

Procedure Variation 1 (20 minutes)

Distribute 2-sided Visual Survey Form.

Following the provided Survey Form, the teacher will identify verbally and instruct students to circle the primary ingredients of a Creole Cottage.
Site: Rural
   
Plan: Rectangle
   
Roof: Hipped
   
Foundation: Raised on Piers
   
Chimney: Central
   
Porch: Gallery
   
Doors: French Doors
   
Columns: Chamfered
Using these identified features, students should design their own version of a Creole Cottage. Remind them the ingredients are on the form in front of them.

After completing the sketch, have students identify and label the ingredients on their drawing.

When all are finished, have students compare their cottages with the image of Magnolia Mound.

Procedure Variation 2 (30 minutes)

Distribute 2-sided Visual Survey Form.

Post image of Magnolia Mound on TV monitor, computer screen, or overhead.

Allow time for students to use image to classify and circle the primary ingredients on the Visual Survey Form of a Creole Cottage. (For correct answers, see Variation 1)

Turn off TV, computer screen, or overhead and instruct students to sketch the Creole Cottage. Remind them they have all the ingredients on the form.

When finished with the drawing, have students identify and label the ingredients used to create their cottages.
