Activity 2
Oil and Natural Gas Boom Timeline

#1 Read the following facts about important oil and gas cities and dates. Use a current map of Louisiana to locate the cities. Then label their locations correctly on a blank state map.

Louisiana’s first producing well was drilled near Jennings in 1901.

In 1904 a vast oil reserve was discovered in Caddo Parish, followed in 1907 by discoveries of natural gas.

Large volume natural gas production began around Monroe in 1916

Louisiana’s first pipeline for petroleum products was built in 1910; it stretched from producing areas in Oklahoma to Baton Rouge, which was the nearest port for ocean-going ships.

In May 1911 what was probably the world’s first offshore oil well, Ferry Lake #1 in Caddo Lake, was completed. Its drilling platform was constructed on a base of cypress logs driven into the lakebed.

#2 Use the facts to create a timeline of oil and gas discovery and production. List the city, date, and event.
