Hardware:
At least one Internet connected multimedia computer connected to
a projection system or large TV screen.
Software:
Microsoft Word or Publishing application, Inspiration software (or
download
free 30-day full-version trial), Adobe Acrobat
Reader (to view the reproducible materials if other software
applications and/or a computer are not available).
Throughout this lesson, the focus will be to provide students with
experiences which will give them an understanding that:
-
Man and the environment together drive architectural choices
-
Events of the early 20th century affected the architectural
designs in Louisiana
-
Technology influenced the changes in the early 20th
century buildings
To
set the stage for this lesson, show students the PowerPoint presentation
of Introduction:
Buildings of the Early 20th Century. Let the images
run (without talking) and ask the students to quietly look at them
noting the similarities and differences. After the students have watched
the images, allow discussion and fill out the “What I Know (
jpeg,
Word,
Inspiration)
” chart using an overhead projector or Inspiration software.
Add all the comments by the students.
Explain that during the next few days, they will be taking a look
at the different styles of buildings in Louisiana during the early
20th century. They will be looking for the answers to the following
essential questions (questions in A
Look at Early 20th Century Architecture in Louisiana --
Essential Questions PowerPoint presentation):
-
What were the buildings like in early 20th century
Louisiana with regards to architectural features/structural design?
-
How do form and function affect Louisiana architecture of the
early 20th century?
-
What role did the advent of technology play in the early 20th
century buildings?
The
teacher may want to post the questions somewhere in the classroom
for reference throughout the duration of the lesson.
Go
to Activity 1: Early 20th Century
Architecture -- An Introduction
Now
that the students have had an opportunity to analyze and compare the
different style buildings of the early 20th century, they
will take a look at the events that changed buildings of this time.
They will get to investigate more information about these structures
later in the lesson.
How
did Technology influence or drive early 20th century buildings?
Show
students the first part of the PowerPoint presentation entitled Technology
Today/Technology of the Early 20th Century. Ask them
how technology affects their everyday lives. Then ask them if they have
any idea what technology was like in the early 20th century.
Discuss and accept all their responses. Then show the students the rest
of the Technology PowerPoint presentation. Ask the students how the
advent of technology in the early 20th century affected the
way structures were built? Allow discussion. This should lead into a
discussion on how events tend to affect man and his environment.
Go
to Activity 2: Mail Order Catalog for Early
20th Century Buildings of Louisiana
Closure:
As a closing activity, the students could present their buildings. In
their presentation, ask the students to consider the essential questions
that were posted at the beginning of the lesson. Students could also
add to the lists they created (using the What I Know ( jpeg,
Word,
Inspiration)
chart) at the beginning of class. Save the products to show during open
house or a Celebrate Louisiana day. Also, save the projects to show
as examples to the students next time the lesson is taught.
